EXPLORE THE OREGON TRAIL
La Grande is one of the few towns the Old Oregon Trail runs right through (B Avenue). North Powder also holds that distinction. The town of Union sits on an alternate route and houses the Union County Museum, where you will find lots of fascinating information about the area's history. La Grande celebrates her pioneer heritage during Oregon Trail Days, an annual event the third weekend in August. A pioneer encampment, arts and crafts, entertainment, a buffalo barbecue, the Pioneer Olympics, an old time fiddlers contest and a Dutch oven cook-off are included in the fun. For insight into the Oregon Trail experience, visit Birnie Park, and the wonderful Oregon Trail Interpretive Park at Blue Mountain Crossing. ***
RODEOS
Union County hosts five wild west rodeos each year. The Eastern Oregon State College Rodeo, Oregon High School Rodeo, Catherine Creek Rodeo, The Elgin Stampede, and the oldest continuously run rodeo in the Northwest - The Eastern Oregon Livestock Show PRCA Rodeo and Parimutuel Horse Racing (EOLS). The EOLS is among the top 15% of the nation's rodeos for added purse. Union County is cattle country. Keep your camera handy. Much of the Old West is still evident in daily ranch operations. Check the calendar of events for rodeo dates and locations or contact the Visitor Bureau. ***
SKIING
Downhill and cross-country skiing, and several hundred miles of groomed snowmobile trails make winter season activities fun and exciting. And the scenery is spectacular. Union County boasts a popular ski resort for downhill and Nordic skiing, Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort. Check out this spectacular view from the chair lift at Anthony Lakes (photo courtesy of Rod Koopman). The newly completed Meacham Divide Cross-country Ski Area, offers outstanding scenery and ski trails that are groomed for skating
and diagonal lanes. Cross-country skiing is also popular on un-groomed trails near the Sno-Park at Catherine Creek Summit. Finally, Spout Springs Ski Resort is scheduled to re-open under new ownership for the 1999 ski season. Equipment and facilities are being upgraded and new runs for snowboarders and snowshoers are being developed. For more information and a ski race schedule, call
(541) 566-0327. ***
